From a friend... H.W.

"The New Colossus" is a sonnet by Emma Lazarus (1849–87), written in 1883 and, in 1903, engraved on a bronze plaque and mounted inside the lower level of the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.


Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day 2013

Change in this country can be painfully slow, and stirred only by individuals like the incredible man that is Martin Luther King, Jr. To make progress, we need strong and committed individuals. Some are going to have to be willing to die, out on the front-lines of difficulties, facing hatred and an opposition to justice and change. Because of this man's life, we have a better America. Remembering you today, you will continue to be blessed in our memory for being a freedom fighter.

consumption

we can't shop our way to sustainability. That is to say that there are two ways to look at the way we live, in this context: you can either buy as much stuff as you want, as long as its green, or you can simply buy less stuff. Research, like in the graph below, cited from Encyclopedia of Earth, suggests that the latter is the way to go.
